How do you discern or identify a bully or terrorist when they first arrive in a congregation. Often such a person is fully of energy and comes across as a “breath of fresh air”. What are signs to watch for that may indicate a personality that is (likely to be intent) on getting his or her way or, worse yet, demand control of everything.

To begin with, discernment is a gift that you either have or don’t have. If you have it, you’ll just “know” as my wife would say (who has that gift in full measure). If not …

There are a number of signs to look for. First, when they have an idea that is either tweaked or postponed or set aside, what is their reaction? Disappointment is normal, but how do they express it? If they do so in negative ways, beware. Second, how invested are they in the “how” something gets done? If it has to be done their way or to their satisfaction then you are probably dealing with a controller at best.

But here’s the real test. Paul told Timothy to “not lay hands on anyone suddenly,” that is, don’t place the mantle of leadership on someone until they’ve been proven. Don’t put new people “in charge” to begin with, no matter how tempting. At New Hope, Oahu (Wayne Cordeiro’s church) all would-be leaders begin by toilet cleaning duty. If they “get” that this is a precious gift of serving, then they are given more. If not …

Finally, if your congregation has congregational covenants of conduct (expected behaviors) and a leadership covenant in place, then you’re well protected.
