I could not agree with you more. The house churches I have come in contact with don’t do discipleship or counseling any better than a traditional church. And I have never seen a house church that did any effective evangelism. Every house church meeting I have been to had at least some time detailing their offense with traditional churches. And this common offense and bitterness in the house church movement is the major flaw.

Carl, I don’t disagree fully … but I’ve known plenty of house churches in North America that are doing fabulous evangelism and discipleship. One of the house churches in my former Seattle network was doing upwards of 10 youth and adult baptisms a year … way above the average for most churches of any model. Neil Cole’s Greenhouse Churches are largely excellent discipling churches, as are many others.

On the other hand, I’m with you. I’ve been in far too many house churches that were mostly angry or bitter people who were “against” the brick-and-mortar churches.

But then … the vast majority, and I do mean the vast majority, of B&M churches don’t do evangelism or discipleship either. As I suggest in on obtuse way, that’s a cultural issue more than a model issue.

Sadly, every model has flaws … because every model is the church, that is, imperfect people. The question for me is what model is the most effective for reaching a specific targeted people. When we tailor the model to the target, we have a winner.

I began thinking yesterday that we made a move from denominationalism to consumerism. Somewhere, we have to have a reformation of sorts or we are going to kill ourselves. We are the church with a 2000 year history. How many brands last more than a generation and today how many brands last more than six months? will people by snugli’s next winter? How lame are crocs? How many labels go bankrupt or get taken over? How can we measure ourselves that way, because we ask not for money in exchange but for lives. We want you to invest your life and we give you spiritual fulfillment that will not bring comfort but change. Many people I talk with do not want change that the status quo or the status quo of 12 years ago when we were more affluent. The gospel does not really care about that.
