I recall in seminary having to lead the children through the carols. I would take time to teach them a bit about what the carol meant. What are you singing about. I can still recall the red headed girl whose hand shot up during “What Child Is This?” and asked what an ass was? I gave the definition and she was alright. The 10 year old boys were laughing.

Maybe the hymnal committee put it in, so all the 10 year olds could snicker with each other as they sang hymn.

Ox and ass before him bow…now that does wonders for the unreached. Bill, you are correct; what passes for tradition at Christmas (and the rest of the year for that matter) often comes off as empty pews.
